Does the eSIM work in Malaysian Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak)?
Coverage is good in main cities — Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan, Miri. Rural areas, jungle interior, and river areas have limited signal. Plan for offline maps if you're heading into the interior or on nature tours.
Can I use Grab throughout Malaysia?
Yes. Grab covers Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and most cities. In smaller towns and rural areas, GrabCar coverage can be thin — local taxis or tuk-tuks may be the only option.
How is coverage in Langkawi?
Good throughout the main tourist areas — Pantai Cenang, Kuah town, and the cable car area. Remote beaches and interior roads on the island can be patchy.
Does the eSIM work on the Mount Kinabalu climb?
Coverage is available at the Kinabalu Park headquarters and at Timpohon Gate (starting point). Above the first checkpoint, signal becomes unreliable and is largely absent above 3,000m. Download offline maps and trail guides before starting.
Is the eSIM useful for navigating Kuala Lumpur's transit system?
Yes. KL's transit network is complex — LRT, MRT, KTM Komuter, monorail, and BRT are run by different operators. The MyRapid app and Google Maps are the most reliable tools for routing across the full network.
How is coverage in Penang and George Town?
Excellent. Penang Island and George Town have strong 4G coverage throughout. The Penang Hill funicular railway area and Batu Ferringhi beach stretch are both well-covered.

Malaysia runs on Grab. The super-app handles ride-hailing, GrabFood delivery, grocery delivery, and payments across Peninsular Malaysia and the main East Malaysian cities. In Kuala Lumpur, the app is practically essential — the taxi network is incomplete and metered taxis can be hard to find in some areas. Most accommodation and tour operators communicate via WhatsApp, which works seamlessly over your eSIM data.
Maxis, Celcom, and Digi provide strong 4G coverage across Peninsular Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur's coverage is excellent throughout including the LRT and MRT underground. Major tourist areas — Penang's George Town, Langkawi, Melaka, Cameron Highlands — all have good signal. East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo) has good coverage in cities (Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan) but drops significantly in jungle and rural areas. The interior of Borneo, river areas, and most of the Mount Kinabalu trail beyond the first checkpoint have limited or no connectivity.
Transport apps for KL: MyRapid for LRT, MRT, monorail and KTM Komuter covers most of KL's urban rail network. Touch 'n Go eWallet for transit payments and highway tolls (widely used across Malaysia). Grab for everything else. Google Maps handles KL transit connections well. For intercity travel, BusOnlineTicket and Easybook handle coach bookings between KL and Penang, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, and other cities — journeys are inexpensive and routes extensive.
East Malaysia scenarios: climbing Mount Kinabalu (Sabah) requires advance permit booking through Sabah Parks — signal on the mountain drops quickly above the first base camp. River cruises to see proboscis monkeys along the Kinabatangan River near Sandakan have limited coverage. Kuching (Sarawak capital) is well-covered for a city its size. Bako National Park near Kuching has no coverage within the park.
Malaysian SIM cards are affordable and widely available — 7-Eleven stocks them, as do airport arrival halls. Maxis, Celcom, and Digi tourist SIMs are competitively priced. KLIA and KLIA2 have multiple SIM kiosks that can queue during busy arrivals. An eSIM avoids the stop entirely.
