Tip: Download Maps.me Bhutan offline tiles and TashiCell coverage maps before landing at Paro International Airport — eastern Bhutan roads have significant coverage gaps and offline navigation is essential.

常见问题
Is there coverage at Tiger's Nest (Taktshang) monastery?
Coverage exists at the trailhead in Paro and partway up the trail. The final steep ascent to Tiger's Nest itself has intermittent or no signal. Download offline maps and camera settings guides before starting the hike.
Does coverage reach eastern Bhutan?
Eastern Bhutan has limited coverage — Trashigang town has basic signal but the roads between eastern dzongs have significant gaps. Download Maps.me Bhutan offline tiles before traveling east of Bumthang.
Is there connectivity in the Phobjikha Valley?
Gangtey village and the main Phobjikha Valley floor have basic TashiCell coverage. The crane observation hides and outer valley areas may have weaker signal.
What altitude apps are useful for Bhutan trekking?
Altimeter GPS and Mountain Forecast are useful for trek planning. The Bhutan high passes (Dochula, Pele La, Thrumshingla) reach 3,000–4,000m — acclimatisation and weather apps are practical tools.
Do I need a VPN in Bhutan?
Bhutan has some internet filtering but most international services function. WhatsApp and standard apps work. A VPN is not generally required for standard travel use.
Is coverage reliable enough to stay in contact with my tour guide?
Yes — along the main tourist circuit (Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, Bumthang) WhatsApp and calls work reliably for guide communication.
What's the speed like in Thimphu?
TashiCell delivers 15–35 Mbps on 4G in Thimphu. It's adequate for maps, messaging, and social media but not for high-bandwidth use.
Can I buy a local SIM as a tourist in Bhutan?
Tourist SIMs are available at Paro airport. Registration requires your passport and visa documentation. An eSIM avoids this process if your device supports it.

可用网络:4G
Bhutan is the last Himalayan Buddhist kingdom and one of the world's most intentionally controlled tourism destinations — a daily minimum spend is required for most visitors. TashiCell provides 4G in Thimphu, Paro, and the main Bhutanese towns. Data is useful for navigating Thimphu's growing city (it now has traffic lights but many streets still lack clear signage), staying in contact with your mandatory licensed tour guide, and accessing altitude and weather apps — crucial given Bhutan's terrain.
TashiCell's 4G is reliable in Thimphu, Paro (home to the international airport), Punakha, and along the main east-west highway. The Phobjikha Valley (black-necked crane sanctuary) has basic coverage in Gangtey village. The famous Tiger's Nest (Taktshang) monastery has coverage at the trailhead in Paro — the trail itself has patchy signal higher up.
Eastern Bhutan — Trashigang, Lhuntse, and the eastern dzongs — has much more limited connectivity. The road east from Jakar (Bumthang) toward Mongar passes through some of the most remote terrain in the Himalayas with large coverage gaps. The mountain passes (Dochula at 3,100m, Pele La, Thrumshingla) have basic signal at the pass itself.
Bhutan's geography makes offline maps essential — Maps.me with the Bhutan pack covers the main roads well. The Druk Path Trek between Paro and Thimphu passes through high-altitude terrain with no coverage for extended sections.
Bhutan's unique Gross National Happiness philosophy means tourism infrastructure is deliberately premium. Most travelers are on guided tours and connectivity needs are modest — but having data for emergencies and photography guidance is genuinely useful.
