Foire aux Questions
Does the eSIM work across all Indonesian islands?
Coverage is strong on Java, Bali, Lombok, and Sumatra. Smaller islands — Flores, Sumbawa, the Gilis — have coverage in main settlements but limited signal away from towns. Remote islands like Raja Ampat have very limited connectivity.
Can I use Gojek with the eSIM?
Yes. Gojek is Indonesia's essential super-app covering rides, food delivery, groceries, and payments. Install it before arrival — it works from the moment your eSIM connects at Bali or Jakarta airport.
How is coverage in Bali's main tourist areas?
Excellent in Seminyak, Kuta, Legian, Canggu, and Ubud. Coverage is good along the main tourist corridor from the airport north to Ubud. Remote northern Bali and western Bali toward Pemuteran have weaker signal.
Will I have signal on the Gili Islands?
Coverage exists on all three Gili Islands but can be inconsistent, particularly on Gili Meno (the quietest island). Gili Trawangan has the best coverage of the three due to its size and tourist density.
Does the eSIM work in Lombok?
Yes, in the main tourist areas — Senggigi, Mataram, and the south coast beach areas. The road to the Rinjani volcano trailhead has coverage in lower sections; the mountain itself has limited signal above base camp.
How is coverage in Nusa Penida?
Coverage is available across most of Nusa Penida, including at Kelingking Beach, Angel's Billabong, and Broken Beach. It can be slower and patchier than Bali, particularly on the less-developed eastern part of the island.
Can I book domestic Indonesian flights using apps?
Yes. Traveloka is the go-to app for Indonesian domestic flights and has the best inventory for routes between Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Makassar, Manado, and Labuan Bajo. Book with your eSIM data connection.
Does the eSIM work in Yogyakarta (for Borobudur and Prambanan)?
Yes. Yogyakarta has strong urban coverage. Borobudur and Prambanan temple complexes both have coverage at the entrance and grounds. The sites are well within the Jogja coverage area.

Indonesia's geography — 17,000 islands — means connectivity varies dramatically by location. On Bali and Java, mobile data works reliably and is used intensively: Gojek (Indonesia's dominant super-app) handles bike rides, car rides, food delivery, grocery delivery, and digital payments. Having Gojek running before you land at Ngurah Rai Airport (Bali) or Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) makes the airport exit significantly smoother than navigating the unmetered taxi offers outside arrivals.
Telkomsel has the widest coverage across the archipelago and is the preferred network for travel beyond Java and Bali. XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo are strong on Java and Bali but thin on more remote islands. Bali coverage is excellent in Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud, Canggu, and Sanur. Lombok is mostly covered in the main tourist corridor (Senggigi, Mataram). The Gili Islands — Gili Air, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno — have coverage but it can be patchy. Nusa Penida (popular day-trip from Bali) has improving but inconsistent signal.
Beyond Gojek, essential apps for Indonesia: Google Maps works better in Indonesia than expected. Traveloka is the local flight and hotel booking app — useful for domestic routes between Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Flores, and Lombok. GoFood and GrabFood handle food delivery. WhatsApp is the dominant communication app across the country — virtually all Indonesian accommodation and businesses use it. Klook handles activity bookings.
Inter-island travel: the Komodo National Park (Labuan Bajo, Flores) has decent coverage in the town but drops on boat cruises to Komodo and Rinca islands. Domestic flights within Indonesia are common — Garuda, Lion Air, and Citilink cover the main routes, all bookable via Traveloka with your eSIM data. Raja Ampat in West Papua is exceptionally remote with very limited coverage outside the main settlement of Waisai.
Local SIM cards in Indonesia are among the cheapest in the world — Telkomsel, XL, and Indosat tourist SIMs available at airport arrival halls and convenience stores (Indomaret, Alfamart). Registration requires passport. An eSIM is worth considering primarily for arrival convenience and for travelers moving between multiple islands where Telkomsel-level coverage quality makes a difference.
