Preguntas Frecuentes

No — the Gobi Desert's main attractions (Flaming Cliffs, singing dunes, Yolyn Am) have no mobile coverage. Download offline maps and coordinate all ger camp logistics before leaving Ulaanbaatar.

Does coverage work at Khövsgöl Lake?

Khatgal town at the southern end has Mobicom coverage. The lake itself and the northern wilderness areas have no signal.

What apps are useful in Ulaanbaatar?

Yandex.Taxi operates in Ulaanbaatar for ride-hailing. The UB City app covers public transport. Viber is widely used alongside WhatsApp for Mongolian contacts.

Is there coverage at Karakorum?

The Karakorum museum and Erdene Zuu Monastery site have basic Mobicom coverage. The surrounding steppes have no signal.

What speeds can I expect in Ulaanbaatar?

Mobicom delivers 10–40 Mbps on 4G in central Ulaanbaatar.

Is offline mapping essential in Mongolia?

Yes — Maps.me or OsmAnd with Mongolia offline maps are essential for the countryside. Nomadic tracks replace paved roads in much of the country.

Is there coverage on the Trans-Mongolian Railway?

Basic coverage between major stations along the Ulaanbaatar–Zamiin-Üüd corridor. Remote steppe sections have no signal.

Does coverage work during Naadam?

Yes — the Naadam Stadium in Ulaanbaatar has good coverage. Provincial Naadam celebrations in the countryside have no signal.

Mongolia is a vast landlocked country of steppe, desert, and mountains — the Gobi Desert, the Mongolian Altai, the Orkhon Valley, and the nomadic herder culture that produces the world's finest cashmere. Mobicom provides 4G coverage in Ulaanbaatar and main provincial centres, with coverage along major roads. Data is essential in Ulaanbaatar for using the UB City app for public transport, navigating the Naadam Festival logistics, and communicating with ger camp operators in the Mongolian countryside via WhatsApp or Viber.

Mobicom's 4G covers Ulaanbaatar well — Sukhbaatar Square, the State Department Store, Gandan Monastery, Zaisan Memorial, and main tourist districts. Coverage extends to Karakorum (the ancient Mongolian capital, 370km southwest), Khövsgöl Lake's southern end, and main aimag (provincial) centres. The Trans-Mongolian Railway corridor has basic coverage between stations.

The Gobi Desert — Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), Yolyn Am ice canyon, and the singing dunes of Khongoryn Els — is where coverage ends. Remote ger camps in the Gobi operate entirely on satellite communications. The Mongolian Altai in the west (Altai Tavan Bogd National Park) has no coverage.

The Orkhon Valley — Mongolia's most important historical corridor with hot waterfalls and the ruins of Karakorum — has sporadic coverage near main tourist sites. Khövsgöl Lake in the north (the 'Blue Pearl of Mongolia') has coverage at Khatgal town but not on the lake itself.

Mongolia uses the tögrög (MNT). The Naadam Festival (July 11-13) is Mongolia's most important celebration and requires advance booking for accommodations. Ger camps are the primary accommodation in the countryside.
