Preguntas Frecuentes
Is there 5G coverage at Bulgarian ski resorts?
Bansko has excellent A1/Telenor 5G. Borovets and Pamporovo have solid 4G at resort bases. Higher lifts may have weaker signal — download piste maps and weather apps offline.
Does Bolt work in Sofia?
Yes — Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Sofia and works well throughout the city. Uber also operates. Both are significantly cheaper and more transparent than street taxis.
Is there coverage along the Black Sea coast?
Yes — resort towns from Varna to Burgas (Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Sozopol, Nesebar) have comprehensive 4G/5G coverage. The coastal road between resorts is well covered.
Does the eSIM cover Rila Monastery?
Rila Monastery town and the immediate monastery area have coverage. The Seven Rila Lakes hiking trail has signal in lower sections; upper lake areas and Musala Peak summit have no coverage.
Do EU roaming rules apply in Bulgaria?
Yes — Bulgaria is an EU member. Your EU roaming plan works here. However, A1/Telenor/Vivacom 5G speeds may exceed your home plan's EU roaming allocation.
Is the Cyrillic script translation app useful?
Very — Bulgarian uses Cyrillic entirely. Google Translate's camera translation mode works well for menus and signs. Download the Bulgarian offline pack for offline use.
What speeds can I expect in Sofia?
A1/Telenor/Vivacom deliver 50–300 Mbps on 5G in central Sofia. Bulgaria has some of the fastest internet infrastructure in Europe.
Does coverage reach the Plovdiv old town?
Yes — Plovdiv's old town (Kapana quarter, Roman theatre, main bazaar) has comprehensive coverage. Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second city and well connected.

Bulgaria is one of Eastern Europe's most underrated destinations, with Black Sea coast resorts, ancient Thracian history, and mountain skiing in the Rhodopes and Pirin ranges. A1, Telenor, and Vivacom all offer 5G in Sofia and major cities, making this one of the better-connected countries in the region for data speeds. For travelers, data is essential for using Bolt (the dominant ride-hailing app in Sofia), navigating the Vitosha mountain trails directly from the city, and booking the Rhodopes hiking routes via AllTrails.
All three carriers provide 5G in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and the major ski resorts. Bansko — Bulgaria's premier ski resort — has excellent coverage including on the main lifts. Borovets and Pamporovo also have solid 4G in resort areas. The Black Sea coast from Varna to Burgas has reliable coverage throughout resort towns like Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, and Sozopol.
The Rhodopes mountain range — including the UNESCO Rila Monastery, the Seven Rila Lakes, and Melnik wine country — has 4G in main towns and along main roads. Higher elevation trails around Musala Peak (Bulgaria's highest) lose signal above the Rila Lakes. The Trigrad Gorge and Devils Throat Cave area has basic coverage.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian lev (BGN) pegged to the Euro. The country joined the EU but is not yet in the Schengen Zone (as of 2024). EU roaming plans apply for mobile data, making this a straightforward destination for European travelers. Bulgarian Cyrillic signage is used everywhere — download Google Translate's Bulgarian offline pack and enable camera translation for menus and signs.
