Frequently Asked Questions

Is there coverage in the Theth and Valbona mountain valleys?

Limited. Shkodër and the approach roads have solid 4G. Signal diminishes as you ascend — Theth village has intermittent coverage at best. Download Maps.me or Google Maps offline tiles for the Accursed Mountains before leaving Shkodër.

Does the eSIM cover the Albanian Riviera?

Yes — the main coastal road from Vlorë to Sarandë has reliable 4G. Beach access tracks off the main road may lose signal. Resort towns like Himarë and Dhermi have good coverage.

Will the eSIM work for the Sarandë–Corfu ferry?

Coverage is reasonable for most of the short crossing (45 minutes). Both the Sarandë and Corfu ports have 4G. Open water in the middle has less reliable signal.

Can I use Bolt or ride-hailing apps in Tirana?

Bolt operates in Tirana and works well with data. Uber does not operate in Albania. Tirana taxis also have their own app — Taxi Comfort and Speed Taxi are alternatives.

Is Albania covered by European roaming plans?

Albania is not an EU member, so EU roaming rules do not apply. EU roaming plans typically do not cover Albania — check your home plan. An Albania-specific eSIM is the reliable option.

What's the network speed like in Tirana?

Vodafone delivers 20–60 Mbps on 4G in central Tirana. The network handles streaming and video calls well in the capital.

Do I need a VPN in Albania?

No internet censorship operates in Albania. A VPN is not required for standard travel use.

How does mobile data compare to buying a local SIM?

Local Vodafone Albania SIMs require passport registration at the airport counter. An eSIM activates instantly on arrival without the registration queue.

eSIM Guide for Albania

Your eSIM connects to major carriers in Albania:

Vodafone

Available networks: 4G

Albania has become one of Europe's most visited emerging destinations, and mobile connectivity has kept pace — Vodafone delivers reliable 4G across the country with 50 GB data plans available at very competitive prices. For travelers, data is essential for navigating the steep mountain roads of Theth and Valbona via Google Maps (which has good Albania coverage), booking guesthouses through Booking.com (many Albanian guesthouses are cash-only and don't appear on Airbnb), and using Bolt for taxis in Tirana and Durrës.

Vodafone's 4G coverage is strong throughout Tirana, Durrës, Shkodër, Vlorë, and the Albanian Riviera coast. The mountain regions — including the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Namuna), Valbona Valley, and Theth — have progressively less coverage as you ascend. The Theth valley itself has limited signal, so download your trail maps and accommodation details before leaving Shkodër.

The Albanian Riviera between Sarandë and Vlorë has solid coverage along the main road and in resort towns like Himarë and Dhermi. The beach access tracks off the main road drop coverage quickly. Ferries to Corfu from Sarandë have decent signal for most of the short crossing.

For longer stays, Albania has some of the cheapest mobile data in Europe. Local SIMs from Vodafone Albania are available at the Tirana airport arrivals hall and cost very little — but require a passport for registration. An eSIM gets you connected the moment you land without the registration queue.

Al-Basha and other translation apps with Albanian language support are worth having — English is widely spoken in tourist areas but less so in mountain villages.
