iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo eSIM compatibility: why your purchase country matters

Apple’s iPhone 18 launch makes one old question more important: which country did you buy your phone in?

An embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) is a digital way to add a mobile plan without inserting a physical subscriber identity module (SIM) card. But an iPhone’s eSIM capability is not determined only by its product name. The purchase market can determine whether the phone has a SIM tray at all—and, in a few places, which mobile plans it can activate.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max now have an eSIM-only variant in selected markets. The new foldable iPhone Duo goes further: Apple says it is eSIM-only worldwide. That is convenient for many travellers, but it makes compatibility checks more specific than “does this iPhone support eSIM?”

iPhone 18 Pro is not the same device in every market

Apple says eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models are available in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and the United States Virgin Islands. These variants use the former physical-SIM space for a larger battery. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement lists the markets and says the design adds two hours of video playback.

That has a simple consequence: an iPhone 18 Pro bought in Canada is not a phone on which you can fall back to a local physical SIM card. Before travel, you need to know that your intended mobile plan can be installed as an eSIM and that the phone is unlocked.

The difference is hardware, not a setting. A software update cannot add a SIM tray to an eSIM-only device.

iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide

Apple describes iPhone Duo as eSIM-only in every market. That makes its connectivity model simpler—there is no regional physical-SIM version to seek out—but it raises the importance of preparation.

Before you leave, confirm that the phone is unlocked, that your chosen provider supports eSIM, and that you can receive any required activation details. Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement says the eSIM-only design frees internal space for battery capacity; it does not remove the need for a compatible carrier and plan.

China mainland is a separate compatibility question

“Will an eSIM-only iPhone work in China?” has two different meanings:

Can the phone use a local China-mainland carrier plan?
Can the traveller use a travel eSIM from a provider outside China mainland?

The first question has a precise answer. Apple says that iPhone models purchased outside China mainland cannot install an eSIM profile from a China-mainland network provider. Apple also says local activation requires a China-supported iPhone model and an in-person visit to the carrier for identity checks. That does not turn every foreign eSIM-only iPhone into an unusable travel phone. It means a local mainland carrier eSIM is not a safe fallback for a phone bought abroad. Treat a travel plan as a separate product: confirm the destination coverage, device-unlock status, and provider’s installation instructions before you rely on it.

For an iPhone bought in China mainland, Apple adds another timing caveat: eSIMs from providers outside China mainland cannot be installed while the device is located in China mainland. If your provider instructs you to install before arrival, do that while you still have reliable internet access.

A practical travel checklist

Use this checklist before buying a plan or boarding a flight:

Find the phone’s model number in Settings > General > About and identify its purchase-market variant.
Confirm that the device is carrier-unlocked.
Decide whether you need a local phone number, travel data, or both. These can have different eligibility rules.
Check the destination’s restrictions before relying on a local eSIM.
Read the provider’s installation timing instructions. Some plans can be installed before travel; others should be activated only when you are ready to use them.
Keep a backup connection plan for arrival, such as airport Wi-Fi or a second device.

When the goal is travel data rather than a local number, compare travel eSIM options by coverage, data allowance, validity, and installation timing—not just by the iPhone name on the box.

Before you buy a plan

Start with the exact phone variant, not just the name “iPhone 18.” Check where it was sold, whether it is unlocked, and whether the plan works at your destination. Those three details matter more than the label on the box.
