Google Maps covers Istanbul's Metro, tram, and ferry routes accurately. The Istanbulkart (transit smart card) can be topped up at machines; the app tracks your balance. For intercity travel, TCDD (Turkish Railways) has an app for booking sleeper trains across Anatolia.
Practical eSIM use cases in Turkey: translating menus (Turkish script is Latin alphabet but vocabulary is opaque for most visitors), booking hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia — operators sell out weeks ahead and the Cappadocia balloon booking sites work over data — and finding restaurants in Istanbul's Karaköy or Beyoğlu neighbourhoods via Google Maps reviews.
Note on calls: WhatsApp text messages and data browsing work normally in Turkey.
