Niger is a vast Saharan and Sahelian country — Africa's largest country by area, home to the Aïr Mountains, the Ténéré Desert (the world's largest sand dune sea), the ancient Sultanate of Agadez, and the W Transboundary Park shared with Burkina Faso and Benin. Airtel provides 4G coverage in Niamey and main towns, but coverage is extremely limited in the Saharan north where most of Niger's most compelling landscapes lie. Data is essential in Niamey for coordinating with tour operators for the Aïr and Ténéré desert expeditions, which require advance permits and organized logistics.

Airtel's 4G covers Niamey, Zinder, Maradi, Tahoua, Dosso, and the main highway towns of the Niger River valley. Coverage along the Route de l'Unité from Niamey to Agadez (the gateway to the Saharan north) has coverage in towns. Agadez — UNESCO-listed ancient caravan crossroads and home to the Great Mosque's distinctive earthen minaret — has Airtel coverage in the town.

Beyond Agadez, coverage ends. The Aïr Mountains (Timia oasis, Arlit), the Ténéré Desert (the Arbre du Ténéré site, Bilma oases, the Fachi salt flats) and the remote Aïr-Ténéré Natural Reserve have no mobile coverage. All desert expeditions require satellite phones for safety.

The W National Park in southwest Niger (the most accessible wildlife park) has basic coverage at Tapoa village near the park entrance. The park interior has no signal.

Niger uses the CFA franc (XOF). French is the official language and Hausa is the most widely spoken local language. Security conditions in northern Niger are complex — always check current advisories before planning a Saharan expedition.
