Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Does Google Maps work properly in South Korea?

Google Maps has restricted access to Korean map data due to local regulations — it's less reliable for navigation in Korea. Use Naver Maps or KakaoMap instead, both available in English and far more accurate for Korean roads and transit.

Can I use KakaoTalk with my eSIM?

Yes. KakaoTalk works over data and is Korea's dominant messaging app — install it before arrival. Most Korean businesses, accommodation, and tour operators communicate via KakaoTalk.

How fast is the 5G coverage in Seoul?

South Korea consistently ranks among the fastest mobile networks globally. Expect 200–500+ Mbps on 5G in Seoul's urban core. 4G LTE typically delivers 50–200 Mbps as a baseline.

Does the eSIM work underground on the Seoul Metro?

Yes. Seoul Metro has strong connectivity at most underground stations and in tunnels on newer lines. This is notably better than most other major city subway systems globally.

Will I have signal on Jeju Island?

Yes. Jeju Island has excellent 4G/5G coverage across all main tourist areas including Jeju City, Seogwipo, and the main coastal roads. Hallasan National Park's summit trail has limited coverage at the top.

Can I use Papago for real-time Korean translation?

Yes. Papago's camera translation mode handles Korean menus and signs better than Google Translate for this specific language. Download the Korean language pack offline in case you're somewhere with slow data.

How do I pay for Seoul Metro with my phone?

Add a T-money transit card via Apple Pay on iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. Once added, tap to pay at turnstiles throughout Seoul Metro, city buses, and even at convenience stores.

Does the eSIM work for booking KTX trains?

Yes. The Korail Talk or Let's Korail app handles KTX booking and works fully with your eSIM data. Book KTX seats in advance — popular routes between Seoul and Busan sell out on weekends and holidays.

South Korea has the fastest mobile internet in the world by most measures, and this matters practically from the moment you land at Incheon. Naver Maps — not Google Maps — is the navigation tool of choice in Korea. Google Maps has restricted access to Korean map data due to local regulations, making it less reliable for turn-by-turn navigation. Naver Maps and KakaoMap are both accurate, available in English, and work seamlessly with fast Korean data. KakaoTalk is the dominant messaging app used by everyone in Korea — tour operators, accommodation, and restaurants communicate through it.

All three major Korean networks — SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ — provide excellent coverage nationwide. Seoul has some of the densest 5G coverage anywhere. Busan, Incheon, Daegu, and other major cities are fully covered. The Seoul Metro has strong underground connectivity at most stations, including in tunnels on newer lines. Jeju Island has strong 4G/5G in all main tourist areas. National park trails (Seoraksan, Jirisan, Hallasan on Jeju) have coverage near trailheads but can drop at high elevations.

Beyond Naver Maps and KakaoTalk, a few apps change how Korea works: Papago (Naver's Korea-specific translation app) is more accurate than Google Translate for Korean, particularly for restaurant menus and signs. KakaoTaxi (integrated into KakaoTalk) handles ride-hailing with GPS-metered fixed fares. Coupang handles deliveries with remarkable speed. T-money for Seoul Metro and buses is now manageable via Apple Pay's transit card or the T-money app.

Specific scenarios where fast data matters: live K-pop concert ticket drops on Melon and Interpark require fast response times. Online reservations for popular Seoul restaurants — especially omakase and tasting menus in Gangnam and Itaewon — go quickly. The Korail app for booking KTX high-speed trains between Seoul, Busan, and Gyeongju. Duty-free shopping at Incheon Airport increasingly requires QR code confirmation on your device.

Local SIM options at Incheon are readily available from SK Telecom, KT, and LG kiosks. Tourist SIMs are data-only (no local calls or texts) and reasonably priced. However, the kiosk queues at Incheon can be substantial after long-haul flights. An eSIM activated before departure gives you identical connectivity — fast Korean 5G — without the wait.
