الأسئلة الشائعة
Do I need a VPN in China?
Yes — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and most Western apps are blocked by the Great Firewall. Install and test a VPN before landing — VPN apps cannot be downloaded from within China as the app stores block them too.
What navigation app should I use instead of Google Maps?
Amap (高德地图 / AutoNavi) is the standard navigation app in China and is far more accurate than Google Maps for Chinese streets and addresses. Baidu Maps is an alternative. Download before arrival.
How do I get around in Chinese cities without Uber?
Didi is China's dominant ride-hailing app. It's reliable, well-regulated, and has an English-language interface. Set up an account with a foreign phone number before arrival.
How does WeChat Pay work for a foreign visitor?
Since 2023, WeChat Pay and Alipay allow foreign bank cards to be linked directly without a Chinese bank account. Complete this setup before arrival using the apps' foreign card registration flow.
Is there coverage on the high-speed trains?
Yes — China's HSR network has consistent 4G throughout, including tunnel sections. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway (the world's highest railway) has coverage along most of its route.
Is there coverage in Tibet?
Lhasa and the Qinghai–Tibet railway corridor have coverage. Remote Tibet — Namtso Lake, EBC approach, remote monastery areas — has limited signal. Tibet also requires a separate Tibet Travel Permit, which must be arranged before the trip.
What speeds can I expect in Beijing or Shanghai?
China Mobile delivers 50–300 Mbps on 4G/5G in major cities. Chinese infrastructure is world-class — expect fast, consistent connectivity in urban areas.
Does the eSIM work for WeChat messaging even without a Chinese number?
Yes — WeChat works with a foreign phone number for account creation. The eSIM provides data connectivity; WeChat authentication uses your registration phone number separately.

China mainland has world-class 4G and 5G infrastructure with China Mobile providing coverage across even remote areas — but it operates behind the Great Firewall, blocking Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and most Western apps. This is the single most important thing to know: configure your VPN before landing. Once inside China, downloading or setting up a VPN becomes very difficult as the VPN app stores are also blocked.
China Mobile's 4G/5G is exceptional — Tier 1 speeds in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and all major cities. The high-speed rail network (HSR) has 4G coverage throughout tunnels and remote sections. Even rural Guizhou, Yunnan's mountain villages, and Tibet's main roads have surprisingly good coverage given the terrain.
The apps you need inside China are different from everywhere else: Didi for ride-hailing (replaces Uber), WeChat for messaging and payments (replaces WhatsApp and Alipay), Amap (高德地图) for navigation (replaces Google Maps, and is vastly better for China streets), Meituan for food delivery, and Ctrip/Trip.com for train bookings. All require Chinese phone number verification or pre-existing accounts — set these up before arrival.
The Great Wall sections near Beijing (Mutianyu, Jinshanling), the Li River in Guilin, Zhangjiajie's glass bridges, and Xi'an's city wall all have excellent coverage. Tibet requires a separate permit and has coverage in Lhasa and along the Qinghai–Tibet railway but limited coverage elsewhere.
For payments: WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate. Since 2023, Alipay and WeChat Pay allow foreign cards to be linked — do this before arrival as the verification process is simpler at home.
