Dubai Metro uses the Nol Card (contactless smart card). You can top up via the RTA Dubai app using your eSIM data connection, or at machines at any Metro station. Apple Pay and contactless card are also accepted at turnstiles.

Some gambling-related apps and adult content sites are blocked at the network level. Standard travel, social media, navigation, and productivity apps all work normally. VPN usage is technically regulated in the UAE, so use with awareness.

The UAE's mobile infrastructure is excellent but has a notable constraint: VoIP calls — WhatsApp voice and video calls, FaceTime audio and video, Skype calls — are blocked or degraded on Etisalat (e&) and du networks due to local telecom regulations. Standard data browsing, WhatsApp text and image messaging, Instagram, maps, and streaming all work normally. For voice calls over the internet, the government-licensed VoIP apps Botim and C'Me are the options that work in the UAE. Most travelers communicate by WhatsApp text and resort to regular international calls for voice.
Coverage across the UAE is excellent. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and all seven emirates have strong 4G with 5G rolling out rapidly in Dubai Downtown, DIFC, and Abu Dhabi's main districts. Coverage extends to desert areas along main roads and to the main beach resorts on the East Coast (Fujairah). Deep desert areas off designated routes can have weak signal.
Essential apps for UAE travel: Careem (the region's dominant ride-hailing app, now owned by Uber) and Uber itself for rides. Deliveroo and Talabat for food delivery. Google Maps covers UAE roads well including Dubai Metro routes. The RTA Dubai app handles Metro top-ups and route planning. Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and major malls have their own apps for parking and indoor navigation — Dubai Mall alone has 1,200 stores and is genuinely difficult to navigate without a map.
Booking in advance: the Burj Khalifa At the Top experience sells out days ahead and is online-only — book through the official website with your eSIM data. Desert Safari and Dune Bashing tours through operators like Platinum Heritage or Bedouin Tours are best booked through Klook or Viator with verified reviews. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has timed entry; the official app handles this.
Local SIM options: Etisalat (e&) and du sell tourist SIMs at Dubai International and Abu Dhabi Airport. Setup is straightforward with passport verification. Prices are reasonable but airport counters add markup. An eSIM configured before arrival saves the counter stop and gives you connectivity at Arrivals, not after.
